In the past we have done governance evaluation processes and they have just been a tick the box exercise. We have used the Governance Evaluator platform with an accredited external facilitator for 2016 and 2017. We found this process very engaging. It gave us, as directors, the ability to analyse ourselves as well as others, without being confrontational.
Along with governance evaluation, the process provides excellent board and director development outcomes. There are also many support resources on the platform to assist with building board and director capabilities.
As we have undertaken the process for 2016 and 2017, we are now able to trend our results. Seeing the changes in our capabilities has been brilliant. We found the process was excellent for director induction and we really benefited from the areas focused on key stakeholder engagement and the water sector specific questions.
We also found Ivana Gillard to be an excellent convener, with a great leadership facilitation and people skills for working through our issues and resulting action plans for capability building. She also has a deep understanding of the sector and is a brilliant facilitator of strategic direction as well.
We will definitely be doing the water sector governance evaluator again next year. The platform is designed to be either led by the chair or an accredited external convener. Next year I, as the chair, will be leading the board through it as the platform provides the perfect templates and support for how to do this.”
